Tree City USA Designation
Mason City, Iowa was recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA Program as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. The year 2017 marks the 13th year Mason City has earned this national recognition.
The program is coordinated in Iowa by the DNR's Forestry Bureau with the goal of enhancing the benefits of trees in the local community. Tree City USA recognizes communities that have provided an outstanding example for other communities by improving forest resources and demonstrating the value of trees providing benefits for future generations.
Mason City has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree department, city forester or tree board; a tree ordinance; a community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita; and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Communities muse reapply for certification and meet the standards annually to maintain the Tree City USA status. Mason City is proud to have been named a Tree City USA for the 13th year.
