ABOUT THE MASON CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT: Mason City is the largest city in North Central Iowa with a population of approximately 28,000, the 13th largest in the state. The city is the 16th largest city in Iowa by geographic size with 28 square miles. Within the boundaries are 201 miles of city, county, and state streets and highways for which the Mason City Police Department is the primary enforcement agency.
Mason City is the major retail outlet in the area because of the two state highways that intersect in the city, U.S Highway 122 and U.S Highway 65. Interstate Highway 35 and the Avenue of the Saints flow just outside the city limits, making Mason City the transportation hub of north central Iowa.
Mason City is currently experiencing growth in retail, medical, industrial, and service areas. The River City Renaissance Project is underway and the new multi-purpose arena is open in downtown. A new Hyatt hotel and performing arts pavilion are also planned. Additional apartment housing is currently under construction just south of downtown.
The area is serviced by the largest medical center in north central Iowa and southern Minnesota. MercyOne North Iowa is the largest employer in the City with more than 2,000 employees. The hospital also has an air ambulance.
Educational opportunities abound in Mason City from having two exceptional high schools, North Iowa Area Community and access to a four-year satellite university center.
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age at appointment.
Must be a citizen of the U.S.
Associates degree OR 65 semester credit hours in a related field OR 4 years active duty service in the armed forces with honorable discharge OR 5 years experience as certified corrections officer OR Iowa Certified Police Officer.
Must have a valid Driver’s License
Must be of good moral character. No felonies, crimes involving moral turpitude, or disqualifying misdemeanors within the last 7 years.
Must not have a drug or alcohol addiction.
Must meet state required physical standards. Have uncorrected vision of 20/100—correctable to 20/20. Color vision consistent with occupational demands.
Must successfully pass written and physical ability testing, as well as post-offer physical (includes drug testing).
Must pass an extensive background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, education, police, criminal, abuse registry, driving records and references.
Must be able to speak, read and write the English language.
Upon hiring must live within 10 miles of the Mason City corporate limits (within six months).
Complete the Law Enforcement Academy and the Mason City Police Department Field Training program.
All employees of the City of Mason City are required to verify eligibility to work in the United States.
TRAINING: The Department requires, upon hiring, that all recruits complete Iowa Law Enforcement Academy program. This program will provide the recruit with the basic fundamentals of law enforcement and general knowledge. Upon graduation from the Academy, the officer will enter the Department’s Field Training Program for 15 weeks where they will be assigned to work with a Field Training Officer. This experienced officer will assist the probationary officer with on the job training under actual street conditions
Starting pay $25.23 hour ( Effective 07/01/2019)
College credit pay up 60 hours $720.00 per year
