Fire Protection Systems (Sprinkler and Fire Alarm)
The Fire Code of the City of Mason City gives the Fire Marshal the authority to require construction documents and calculations for all fire protection systems (sprinkler and fire alarm) in new construction or major remodeling projects. The Fire Marshal then reviews and approves proposed fire protection systems. Construction documents for sprinkler and fire alarm systems must be of sufficient clarity to indicate the location, nature and extent of the work proposed. The plans and documents need to show in detail that the system will conform to the International Fire Code and International Building Code as adopted by the City of Mason City. Construction documents and plans can be mailed or dropped off at Fire Headquarters (350 5th St SW, Mason City, IA 50401-3822).
Permits are required through the City’s Inspection Services for construction and remodeling projects within the City’s limits. However, special permits are not required by the Fire Marshal or the Fire Department for fire protection systems. In addition, there is no charge for the Fire Marshal’s plan review and fire protection system approval process.
The Fire Marshal does not review construction documents and plans for fire protection systems for projects that are outside the City’s corporal limits. Contractors and property owners outside the City’s limits are encouraged to contact Cerro Gordo County Planning and Zoning (641.421.3075) for any requirements the County may have regarding review and approval of fire protection systems.
Anyone with any questions regarding review and approval of fire protection systems within the City’s corporal limits should feel free to contact the Fire Marshal (641.421.3640) during normal business hours. The Fire Marshal always welcomes the opportunity to work with and assist fire protection system designers and contractors.
