Friends of Mason City Dog Park  
In 2011, interested citizens voice a proposal of an off-leash dog park in the community. A Dog Park Development Committee was formed which combined their volunteer time and talents moving forward in the planning of the dog park. Neighborhood visioning meetings were scheduled which provided an opportunity for everyone in Mason City and the surrounding areas who were interested in the dog park to come together and express their ideas for the future look and use of the park.

The dog park is located at the intersection of Elm Drive and 13th Street NW across the street from Mason City’s Water Treatment Plant.  The park officially opened in 2014.

The Dog Park was created due to efforts of the Friends of the Mason City Dog Park Committee. The location was determined as the best reuse of property that was damaged in the 2008 flood. The layout of the park features three separate areas, a large dog area for dogs 30 pounds and over, a small dog area for dogs up to 30 pounds, and a training/agility area.

Rules are posted by the main entrance. The park hours are dawn to dusk, there is no membership fee, but all dogs using the park must have and display a current rabies tag. Getting your dog vaccinated against kennel cough is highly recommended. Any dogs displaying aggression should be immediately removed from the dog park for the safety of all involved.

The Dog Park is for the use and enjoyment of all responsible owners and well behaved dogs. Owners are legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries caused by their dogs.

 The Mason City Dog Park was developed to provide an area for dogs to roam free, interact and socialize with other dogs while their owners are present in the park. Owners and their dogs that use this facility should expect frequent interactions with other dogs or people while at the park. This is part of the animal socialization process.

Park Rules:

  • Open from Dawn to Dusk.
  • Dogs must be leashed when entering or leaving the safety of the Dog Park.
  • Dogs must have current rabies & wear a visible license tag clipped to their collars at all times, to utilize the Dog Park. Rabies tags are a proof of vaccination, while license tags show compliance with state and local laws. Bordetella, a kennel cough vaccine, is recommended. Keep a copy of current shot records on hand for police or animal control officials. Dogs that are up to date on vaccinations are less likely to spread certain communicable diseases.
  • Maximum of 3 dogs per person. Carry a leash for each dog at all times.
  • Owners must clean up after dogs and dispose of waste properly. Fill any holes your dog digs.
  • Dog handlers must be 16 years old. Younger children must be accompanied by an adult and be under close supervision at all times.
  • Small dog area is limited to 30 pounds and under.
  • The owner/handler must be in control of his/her dog(s) at all times. The dog must be within view and under voice control of the owner/handler. Do not leave your dog unattended in the park.
  • Remove dogs at the first sign of aggression.
  • Agility equipment is for dog use only. Please do not climb or allow children to climb on equipment.

The following are prohibited in the park:

    • Aggressive dogs
  • Any dog exhibiting aggressive behavior must be removed from the park immediately. If your dog gets into a fight, exchange names and/or call the local police, (641) 421-3636.

    • Puppies under 6 months of age
    • Dogs in heat
    • Sick dogs
    • Prong or spike collars
    • Children under 8 years old.
    • Children running or chasing after dogs.
  • Small children, especially running children, may be regarded as prey animals by strange dogs. Dogs may also feel the urge to protect children they know. This tends to cause aggressive behavior.
    • Smoking, food, dog bones, glass containers
    • Bicycles, strollers, wagons, skateboards, motorized vehicles, etc.
  • Park users and dog owners assume all risks related to the dog park and are liable for damages, injuries or illness caused by their dogs. Neither the Friends of the MC Dog Park, nor the MC Department of Park and Recreation can be held responsible.
  • Entering the park constitutes the patron’s agreement to be subject to all rules.
