Water Recreation in 'River City'
The Winnebago River is a 72-mile river in Northern Iowa with tributaries that begin in Minnesota and flow to the Mississippi River. Mason City is known as the original ‘River City’ with the Winnebago River flowing right through the heart of the community.
There are numerous recreational opportunities in 'River City' for water enthusiasts! Appreciate the comfortable enjoyment of the river for several lengthy trips along the water trail and create a prime destination for water recreation tourists.
Portage ramps, paved trails connecting to existing pedestrian and bike trails and parking area are located at major access points on the river.

The City of Mason City has prioritized the mitigation of the dams along the Winnebago River over the past few years, removing the impediments to use this waterway as a water trail. This is a great opportunity to develop one of the best water trails in the state. Mason City is proud to have beautiful scenery and great amenities close to the Winnebago River. The river winds through the heart of the community and through East Park which is home to the historic 457 Cannonball locomotive, the confluence with Willow Creek, numerous shelters and playgrounds, and the Mason City Aquatic Center. Another important feature is MacNider Campground - it's located along the banks of the Winnebago River. This location is a perfect spot for paddling/canoe/kayak enthusiasts, tubers, and anglers to access the river and spend the night while utilizing the water trail. Come and enjoy what 'River City' has to offer!
