Tree City USA and Growth Award Designation
Urban Forestry awards recognize local dedication to trees and outreach
DES MOINES, Iowa – Every year the Urban Forestry Awards luncheon recognizes cities, college campuses and utilities that demonstrate a variety of dedication to the importance of trees. This year marks the 20th year Mason City has been the recipient of the Tree City USA award.
Mason City was also named a recipient of the Growth Award. This is the 9th year Mason City has been honored with this designation as a Tree City USA Growth award recipient. To receive the award, a city must, at a minimum, provide education and public relations; partnerships; planning and management; and tree planting and maintenance in their communities.
Founded in 1976, Tree City USA is one of the Arbor Day Foundation's earliest programs. They partner with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters to encourage tree planting in cities nationwide. Becoming a Tree City USA is an accomplishment in and of itself - but Mason City has gone above and beyond, taking initiative to create a greener future for its residents. This Growth Award is proof of that.
