Deputy Chief Mitch Smith started his career with the Mason City Fire Department in 2013.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in the Spring of 2024 and later to Deputy Chief of EMS the
same year. Prior to coming to Mason City Fire Department Mitch served as a volunteer fire
fighter with the Independence Fire Department as well as a Critical Care Paramedic with
both Area Ambulance and Regional Medical Center of Delaware County.

Deputy Chief Smith received his Associate’s Degree in Emergency Medical Services from
Columbia Southern University where he plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree as well in the
future. He is certified as a firefighter II, Officer II, Instructor II, Hazmat Technician, and
Critical Care Paramedic through the state of Iowa.

As the Deputy Chief of EMS Mitch’s passion for teaching and commitment to service
through Emergency Medical Services aids the department’s mission of providing service to
our community with loyalty, integrity, accountability, and teamwork.

When not at work Mitch enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids as well as cooking
and woodworking.
