MCFD Fire Explorer Post 2300
The Mason City Fire Department’s Explorer Program is a hands-on fire and emergency medical services career exploration program. The MCFD Explorer Program is open to young men and women aged 14 to 20 years old with an interest in learning more about careers in the fire or EMS services. Our young Explorers participate in a wide variety of extensive firefighting, CPR and first aid training. The experience, discipline, and knowledge these young men and women gain will benefit them in their future endeavors whether they decide to become a firefighter or not. Of course, the benefits of the program if they do decide to become a firefighter are even greater. In the end, it will benefit them and the decisions they make throughout their lifetimes. If you think you’re ready to better yourself, have fun, experience things you have never experienced, and meet new people...then come join us here at the Mason City Fire Department’s Explorer Post. We meet every other Wednesday evening and some Saturdays for our training. New Explorers are inducted into the Program every fall and spring.
More information regarding the Program and qualifications to join can be found in our Explorer Program brochure.

In addition to the scheduled training meetings, MCFD Fire Explorers are encouraged to come and ride on the ambulances and fire apparatus on real 9-1-1 emergencies and calls. After completing a Ride Along Agreement, Explorers can schedule times to ride alongside the dedicated men and women who make up the Mason City Fire Department. This ride along experience will be invaluable to those young men and women who seek a career in the fire or EMS services.
There are costs associated with participating in the Department's Explorer program. However, the Mason City Fire Department is committed to finding ways for all interested young adults to participate regarding of financial ability on the part of the participant or the participant's family. The Fire Department is always on the search for grants and scholarships to help the MCFD Fire Explorer Post 2300 with equipment, training opportunities and events in other locations. In connection with funding requests we ask for and receive, we do request that all participants agree to have their pictures and demographic information used generally in connection with the program. However, identification of any participant, either on-line or in a grant document, by specific name will not be done except on a express consent by the participant or their legal guardian.
The Fire Explorer Program is part of the Boy Scouts of America and Learning for Life. All future Explorers will complete a Youth Participation Application. Current participation fees for Explorers are $26 per year. However, the Mason City Fire Department and the City of Mason City’s grant writer are currently working with several local foundations and service organizations to provide scholarships for participation.
